What is a Columbarium?

A Columbarium is a burial space for cremated remains. The word “columbarium” comes from the Latin “columba”, meaning “dove”. Columbaria were first used in the Ancient Roman Empire where they were built into walls of tombs to hold cremated remains. Urns were also used within churches for the burial of remains, with the ashes placed within a niche in the church or cemetery wall.

Columbaria are freestanding structures, located within cemeteries, churches, funeral homes, and private residences or places of meaning. Columbaria are made up of niches – a 12″ square compartment. The niches have removable front panels that easily store urns and other meaningful items inside. A standard niche will hold two urns.

Our Patented KMI Aluminum Columbarium

KMI uses a Commercial 5052 grade aluminum internal structure. Think of it as the ‘bones’ of the unit. These ‘bones’ are the foundation of the strength of the Origins Columbarium. Engineered to support 1700 pounds per square foot, it can easily hold the weight of not only its’ own cladding  but also any statue or decorative piece that you would like to mount on top of it.

Our Ductal® Cladding System

More than anything, Ductal® is known for its durability – its resistance to aging and aggressive environments. Its denser matrix, free of defects at the macro and micro level, allows Ductal® to resist environmental wear longer than other concretes. With its extremely low permeability, water and abrasive elements are unable to penetrate the concrete matrix. This also offers excellent defense against the harmful effects of the freeze/thaw cycle and exposure to seawater, sulfates, weak acids and carbonation. In cladding solutions, waterproofing is essential and Ductal® offers the assurance of a water-tight mix.
